mister-sister:

so some incoherent thoughts that have been brewing all weekend:

I guess I am feeling really weird about this Chris Brown media storm? I don’t think it is unwarranted (abusers being held accountable for their actions is important), that isn’t what’s bothering me. What’s bothering me is I’ve seen a…

My only problem with it is that Fassbender is still a good actor. Chris Brown is… I have no perspective on Chris Brown, but apparently people he’s a good musician.

So, yes. Morally reprehensible, awful, awful. Maximum legal penalty (which I think Brown got, actually since he’s still on probation) and shame, shame on them both and on the people who support their actions.

But, this is really the kind of thing that demands a separation between their popularity and the quality of their work.

Solve for X in the following problem:

Awards celebrations (theoretically) celebrate the quality of work in X genre or category.

To me, that’s not a moral or legal issue. Woody Alan and Soon-Yi? That was some fucked up shit too, you know? I do not want to know Woody Alan. I do not want to know Chris Brown. I do not want to know Michael Fassbender.

But Woody Alan makes good movies, Chris Brown (allegedly) makes good music, and Michael Fassbender is a good actor.

The awards ceremonies are not (or at least are not supposed to be) reflective of their quality as people but as artists.

I mean, the ideal scenario would be Chris Brown or whoever winning their award for best thingmaker and the MC announcing that “So-and-so will be accepting the award on their behalf because they are in prison right now. For being terrible, terrible people.”

But that’s me and I tend to compartmentalize.
